Our Grief Is Not A Cry For War!

The birth of CFWP

CFWP began on September 12, 2001. Its first action was to organize this candlelight vigil in Griffith Park, on the Sunday following September 11. This was the first such event in L.A. after 9/11.

May Peace Prevail On Earth

The initial graphic for the new coalition included the candle that's still part of our logo, and the words of the famous World Peace Prayer. This design, along with the first web site, was by Terry Burke aka elbop. He's a talented artist who's made a lot of the flyers you've seen around L.A. since D2K re-energized protest in our city.

As political leaders whipped up rage in the United States, peace activists responded by distributing the first protest signs online with Adobe Acrobat.

CFWP gave out another early flyer, quoting Barbara Lee's courageous speech in Congress. Even though she was targeted and defeated in the next election, her words have proven to be only too prophetic.

Here's the full-size, printable PDF flyer
(Adobe Acrobat required).

Our colorful World Peace Flag, by members Peter Dudar and Sally Marr, made its first appearance at this Westwood Federal Building demonstration on September 22. Note the first in a series of campy billboards on the Medical Center across the street (far left).

A week later, our new Peace Flag banner came to its first march, also in Westwood. From the start, we've opposed occupation and racism worldwide, including in Palestine.
